The Longnose Hawkfish (Oxycirrhites typus) is immediately recognizable: its sharply elongated snout, bold red-and-white crosshatch pattern, and habit of perching motionless on coral branches or gorgonians give it the presence of a living sculpture in the aquascape. It hunts by watching patiently from elevated perches and darting onto small prey – a behavior fascinating to observe. Longnose Hawkfish are generally compatible with most fish tank mates but will consume ornamental shrimp and small crustaceans given the opportunity; pistol shrimp and cleaner shrimp pairings are not recommended. They are reef safe with hard and soft corals. Feed a varied diet of frozen meaty foods including mysis, krill, and small shrimp. Provide perching opportunities – branching coral structures or open rockwork with elevated ledges are ideal.
