Lettuce Nudibranch

A living piece of reef art – and a highly effective biological control for nuisance Bryopsis and hair algae.

The Lettuce Nudibranch (Elysia crispata) is one of the most visually remarkable invertebrates available for the reef aquarium, its body covered in flowing, ruffled cerata in vivid shades of green, blue, and white – a living art form that moves gracefully through the aquascape. Its real value lies in its feeding behavior: the Lettuce Nudibranch is one of the only organisms known to consume Bryopsis algae, a filamentous nuisance that is resistant to most conventional control methods. It also grazes on other hair algae varieties. Importantly, this nudibranch incorporates the chloroplasts of the algae it eats into its own tissue, sustaining itself partially through photosynthesis. Reef safe with all corals and fish. Best maintained in systems with active algae growth to ensure an adequate food supply.
