The Matted Filefish (Acreichthys tomentosus) occupies a unique niche in the reef system: it is one of the few fish reliably observed consuming Aiptasia glass anemones – a pest that can overrun and damage reef systems if left unchecked. Beyond its utility, the Filefish is a graceful, mottled fish with a flattened profile and subtly beautiful patterning that allows it to blend effortlessly into the reef background. It is generally peaceful, slow-moving, and timid – easily startled by aggressive tank mates and best kept in calm community settings. Feed a varied diet including frozen mysis, small meaty preparations, and algae-based foods; establish the fish’s confidence before relying on it for Aiptasia control. A quiet, purposeful addition to any mature reef display.
