The project began with detailed CAD drawings that visualized the aquarium’s unique dual-tank configuration with an integrated doorway passage. These technical renderings were essential for calculating the proper acrylic thickness and ensuring structural integrity. The design was submitted for comprehensive structural analysis to verify that the foundation could support the aquarium’s weight of several tons when fully installed.

Before installation could begin, we assessed the existing wall between the entryway and kitchen. The wall featured decorative molding panels that would be completely replaced by the new aquarium structure.

The wall was carefully demolished and removed, creating an open space that revealed the full kitchen area. Exposed ceiling joists and structural supports were reinforced to accommodate the massive weight and unique load distribution of the aquarium installation.

Due to the aquarium’s massive size and the home’s layout, traditional interior delivery was impossible. A large mobile crane was brought to the property to lift the aquarium sections over the house from the backside. This aerial installation method, while complex, was the only viable approach for positioning such a large custom structure. The waterfront location of Lido Island and the surrounding Mediterranean-style homes can be seen in this dramatic installation shot.

Once the aquarium sections were craned into position, our expert installation team carefully maneuvered and secured each component. The team worked meticulously to ensure perfect alignment and structural stability. The distinctive turquoise staircase visible in the background became a signature design element that complements the aquarium’s oceanic theme.

Below the aquarium, we created a comprehensive filtration room in the basement. This dedicated mechanical space houses all the life support systems including:
The remote filtration setup keeps all equipment noise and maintenance activities away from living spaces while ensuring optimal water quality for the marine ecosystem above.

With the structure complete and systems operational, our team performed the intricate work of aquascaping and introducing marine life. The aquarium’s size allows for in-tank diving maintenance, which you can see here as our specialist works inside to arrange rockwork, kelp, and other natural elements. This hands-on approach ensures precise placement and the health of the developing ecosystem.

The aquarium now sits in all its glory as a breathtaking centerpiece that transforms the home’s interior. The completed installation features:
The view from the living room showcases the full majesty of this underwater world, with the kitchen visible through the aquarium’s crystal-clear water and doorway passage. The spiral staircase’s turquoise carpeting creates a cohesive color story that connects the terrestrial and aquatic elements.
Fish by Design was contacted by a homeowner who wanted a large, impressive aquarium but wasn’t sure about the specifics. After careful consideration, we decided to remove the wall between their entry/living room and kitchen, replacing it with a 3,500-gallon saltwater specimen aquarium. This stunning installation has become a breathtaking architectural focal point that seamlessly connects two living spaces while showcasing vibrant marine life.
Lido Island is one of Newport Beach’s most prestigious waterfront communities, surrounded by Newport Harbor and known for its Mediterranean homes, private docks, and charming village atmosphere. This exclusive coastal location made it the perfect setting for our ambitious saltwater aquarium project.
This custom-designed aquarium houses carefully selected fish and marine life, creating an authentic representation of a thriving coastal ecosystem. As a specimen aquarium, it showcases species that highlight the natural beauty and biodiversity of Pacific waters.
