Blue Hippo Tang

The Blue Hippo Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus), also known as the Regal Tang or Pacific Blue Tang, is one of the most sought-after fish in the saltwater hobby. Its vivid electric blue body, bold black patterning, and yellow tail create an unmistakable silhouette that brings energy and color to any display. Blue Hippos are active, open-water swimmers that require substantial horizontal swimming space – a minimum of 100 gallons, with 150+ preferred for long-term health. They graze constantly on algae and require a diet rich in marine plant matter; supplement with dried nori and quality algae-based frozen foods. Peaceful toward dissimilar tank mates but competitive toward other large tangs. Like all tangs, they are susceptible to ich and marine velvet, particularly during acclimation; a robust quarantine protocol is strongly recommended.
