Despite its common name, the Chicken Liver sponge (Halichondria bowerbanki) is a legitimate and visually compelling addition to a mature reef system. This encrusting organism spreads across rock surfaces in irregular, lobed formations ranging from olive green to amber brown – a natural sculptural element that contrasts beautifully against hard coral skeletons. Unlike photosynthetic corals, it is a true filter feeder, drawing sustenance from dissolved organics and fine particulate matter in the water column. It requires no special lighting, making it an ideal candidate for shaded or lower-flow niches within the aquascape. Best suited for established systems with stable water chemistry.
