Dragons Breath Macroalgae

Dragon’s Breath (Halymenia spp.) is one of the most visually arresting macroalgae available for the display reef, presenting dense, flowing fronds in deep burgundy and wine red that contrast dramatically against the blues and greens of surrounding corals. Beyond its aesthetic value, it functions as a natural nutrient export – drawing nitrates and phosphates from the water column as it grows – and provides shelter for pods and microfauna that contribute to a healthy reef ecosystem. Dragon’s Breath thrives under moderate to high lighting with gentle, multidirectional flow to keep its fronds in motion. It anchors to rock or rubble and grows at a manageable rate, unlike faster nuisance macros. Note: most reef fish will graze on it given the opportunity – best displayed in systems with peaceful, coral-focused livestock or within a display refugium.
