Lawnmower Blenny

The Lawnmower Blenny (Salarias fasciatus) earns its place in any reef system through relentless utility: its specialized blade-like teeth are perfectly adapted for cropping film algae, diatoms, and green algae from rockwork and glass surfaces, providing biological control that surpasses most mechanical alternatives. Beyond its function, it is an engaging and personable fish – its large expressive eyes, cryptic mottled pattern, and habit of resting on rock surfaces in an upright posture make it a consistent focus of attention in the aquascape. The Lawnmower Blenny requires a well-established system with natural algae growth; in very clean systems, its diet should be supplemented with algae-based foods and nori. Peaceful toward most tank mates but may show aggression toward other blennies of similar appearance.
