Lobophyllia (Brain Coral / Lobed Brain) is a large-polyp stony coral that commands attention wherever it is placed. Its thick, fleshy tissue extends well beyond the skeletal margin during the day, displaying vivid patterns of green, red, orange, and multicolor combinations that rank among the most saturated available in LPS. Each colony is essentially unique in coloration and pattern. Lobophyllia prefers placement on the sand bed or lower rock with indirect, low to moderate flow – direct high-velocity current causes tissue retraction and stress. It is an active feeder: meaty foods offered 2-3 times per week produce noticeably faster growth and superior coloration. Maintain distance from aggressive LPS neighbors; this coral produces potent sweeper tentacles at night. A hallmark specimen of the serious LPS collection.
