Mimic Half Black Tang

A rare and striking tang with dramatic two-tone coloration and one of the most unique silhouettes in the genus.

The Mimic Half Black Tang (Acanthurus chronixis / A. tristis) is a seldom-seen and visually arresting surgeonfish, its body divided between a warm brown-yellow anterior and a deep black posterior in a sharp, dramatic transition. Juveniles of this species mimic the Lemon Peel Dwarf Angelfish (Centropyge flavissimus) – a fascinating evolutionary adaptation that provides protection from predators early in life. Adults develop into a striking, unusual fish that stands apart from the common tang palette. Moderate swimming space requirements (90-120 gallons), herbivore diet with ample nori and marine algae, and standard tang husbandry apply. May show competitive behavior toward similar-shaped tangs; otherwise peaceful in community reef settings. A genuine collector’s fish.
