Sea Urchin

Sea urchins available in the reef hobby represent several genera – most commonly Echinometra, Mespilia, and Tripneustes – and come in a range of colors from black and brown to vivid blue, red, and banded patterns. All are highly effective herbivores, grazing methodically on coralline and filamentous algae from rockwork surfaces with specialized Aristotle’s lantern mouthparts capable of cropping material tightly against hard substrates. Their five ambulacral tube feet allow them to navigate vertical and inverted surfaces with surprising agility. An important compatibility note: sea urchins will disturb and overturn any unsecured frag plugs, small coral colonies, and loose rock in their path – secure all specimens before introduction. Require stable alkalinity and calcium for spine integrity.
