The Tiger Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus bellulus) is one of the most behaviorally complex invertebrates available for the reef aquarium. Named for the powerful snapping claw that produces a concussive sound wave used to stun prey, this nearly blind shrimp excavates and maintains an elaborate burrow system in the substrate – a partnership shared with the Yellow Watchman Goby, which guards the entrance while the shrimp builds. The goby communicates threat via antennae-touch signals at the burrow opening; observing this interaction in a well-designed aquascape is consistently captivating. The Tiger Pistol Shrimp requires a deep sand bed of at least 3 inches for natural burrowing behavior. Reef safe with corals; will consume very small ornamental invertebrates. The Goby-Pistol pairing is one of the most rewarding symbiotic displays in reef keeping.
