The homeowner initially contacted Fish By Design without a clear vision, expressing interest in a freshwater aquarium system. Through consultation and exploration of various possibilities, our team introduced them to the concept of a reef aquarium. The client was immediately captivated by the abundance of colors, sizes, and diversity that a mixed reef ecosystem offers.
What resonated most deeply with the homeowner was the idea of creating an entire living ecosystem rather than simply a space for fish. This shift in perspective transformed the project from a decorative element into a dynamic, self-sustaining natural environment that would become the heart of their home.

After deciding on a reef system, the client chose acrylic construction over traditional glass for two critical reasons: enhanced safety considerations and superior structural integrity. Acrylic’s impact resistance and lighter weight made it ideal for a room divider application where the aquarium would be viewed and accessed from multiple angles.
Detailed technical drawings with precise dimensions were created and provided to the contractor and carpenter, as this aquarium build was coordinated as part of a larger whole-property remodel. This level of integration required careful planning to ensure the aquarium installation aligned perfectly with the overall architectural vision and construction timeline.

Once the construction crews completed the structural preparations and installed the custom-built stand, our team arrived to position the aquarium. This phase required meticulous attention to detail, as the aquarium needed to be perfectly centered in its designated location to function effectively as a room divider.
The aquarium arrived carefully wrapped and protected for transport. Our installation specialists worked methodically to maneuver the substantial acrylic structure into position, ensuring proper alignment from both room perspectives. The precision required at this stage cannot be overstated—even slight misalignment would compromise the visual balance and architectural intent of the design.

With the aquarium securely positioned, our team completed the plumbing and filtration system installation. We designed a custom filtration solution to maximize space beneath the aquarium while providing the most effective filtration possible for the 350-gallon system.
The system features a submersible main circulation pump, filter socks for mechanical filtration, and a protein skimmer to remove organic compounds. Temperature stability is maintained through an integrated chiller and heater combination. The system also relies on biological filtration provided by live rock, which houses beneficial bacteria that process fish waste and maintain water chemistry balance.

After completing the plumbing and equipment installation, the aquarium was filled with saltwater and the cycling process began. The system ran continuously to build beneficial bacterial colonies and stabilize water parameters before introducing livestock.
The custom LED lighting system was installed and programmed to simulate natural reef conditions. While the system matured, custom furniture and cabinetry were fabricated to complete the architectural integration.
With the system fully cycled, our team began creating the reef structure. Live rock was arranged to create caves, overhangs, and plateaus for fish territories and coral attachment. We introduced a diverse variety of corals selected for their visual appeal, compatibility, and placement requirements.

With the reef structure established and the custom cabinetry installed—featuring stained wood covering on both the top and bottom units—the aquarium was ready for its final inhabitants. The final phase involved introducing carefully selected fish species. Each fish was chosen for its coloration, behavior, and peaceful temperament to ensure harmonious cohabitation.
Species selection considered not just aesthetics but also ecological roles—herbivores to control algae growth, planktivores to add movement throughout the water column, and bottom-dwelling species to utilize all vertical zones. The result is a fully functioning reef ecosystem that mimics the complexity and beauty of natural coral reefs.
This 350-gallon mixed reef aquarium serves as both a functional room divider and stunning focal point, elegantly separating the dining room and living room spaces while creating a vibrant centerpiece for the entire home. The installation showcases the versatility of custom aquarium design, transforming two living areas into a cohesive space connected by a thriving marine ecosystem.
