Purple Tang

The Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum) is among the most coveted surgeonfish available, its deep indigo-purple body accented by a vivid yellow tail and electric blue facial markings – a color palette that commands attention in any display. Native to the Red Sea, it is less commonly available than its Pacific relatives, which contributes to both its price and its desirability among serious collectors. Purple Tangs are active, bold fish that require substantial horizontal swimming space (125 gallons minimum) and a diet rich in marine plant matter – supplement with dried nori, macroalgae, and quality herbivore preparations daily. They are highly territorial toward other tangs and surgeon fish; careful introduction protocol and adequate swimming volume are essential in community settings. Reef safe with established corals.
